Minutes of the Board of Governors Meeting August 20, 2003
The regular meeting of the Washington Figure Skating Club Board of Governors was held on August 20, 2003 at the McLean Government Center. President Peter Tsai called the meeting to order at 7:50 p.m. with board members Bob Dorsey, Barb Kapinus, Linda Laurel, Judy Reiner, Margo Ritter, Barbara Shaw, Marcia Sowles, Vera Spinner, Caroline Thorington, Debra Vandemark and Jim Wilson attending. Laurie DeRose, Konrad Huppi and Tom Solomon did not attend. The meeting was opened with an announcement regarding Florence Sifferd's Memorial Service, to be held on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Western Presbyterian Church, 24th and G Streets, NW.
The minutes of the July 16, 2003 meeting were corrected to show the correct date in the heading (changed from June 18), and were approved as amended on a motion by Debra Vandemark.
TREASURER'S REPORT
Konrad Huppi was not present to provide a report for the new fiscal year. Judy Reiner provided the final Treasurer's Report for fiscal year 2002-03. The numbers for total income and total expenses remained unchanged from those reported last month. Adjustments were made in allocating some of the income from pick-up fees to the club competition (total of $2,881 in income) and some of the Rink & Program expenses to the Open House ($470 in expenses).
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Membership reports 661 members (621 home club members).
Contracting: Ashburn has sent contracts for the Adult New Year's Invitational (Jan. 30-Feb. 2, 2004) and the Edward Picken Pro Am Dance Classic (June 11-13, 2004).
Mt. Vernon has approved dates for test sessions (Oct. 20, 2003 and Jan. 19, 2004) and the Club Freeskating Competition (Jan. 21 & 22, 2004).
Rink & Programming: Programming is set for the first eight weeks of classes on Monday nights at Cabin John: Bobbie Shire will conduct a spin clinic on Sept. 8, 15 and 22 (at a cost of $125/class) and Chika Maruta will lead an Edges and Expression class on the remaining 5 weeks (at a cost of $100/class).
Pro Liaison: The board passed a motion by Linda Laurel to give Michael McCullough provisional approval to teach for three months on any session on which there is room.
Barb Kapinus will serve temporarily as pro liaison while Vera Spinner is recuperating from surgery.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Committee Appointments: Ann Merz and Jennifer Lyon will be Hospitality Co-Chairs. Marcia Sowles has been appointed member-at-large.
Open House is scheduled for Sept. 7, 2003 at Cabin John. Tom Solomon will lead a parents' discussion.
Club Competitions: The Freeskating Competition is scheduled for Feb. 21, 2004 at Mt. Vernon (8 hours), unless the rink needs to hold make-up classes on that day. In that case, the competition would use four hours on Saturday, Feb. 21 and four hours on Sunday, Feb. 22. The Dance Competition is scheduled for March 29, 2004 at Cabin John.
