Prince William Ice Center Disaster

February 2010

Many WFSC members lost their home skating rink last month when the heavy snow caused the roof to collapse. No one was hurt, but the Prince William Ice Center is a total loss. WFSC had several synchronized skating teams who used the rink as well as many competitive individual skaters. Some skater's skates and belongings were in rented lockers probably not to be seen again since the building was condemned. The ice center is currently working with the insurance agents.

Since the disaster, coaches and students alike are traveling to SkateQuest Reston, Kettler Iceplex, Mount Vernon RECenter, and other rinks. For many of us, Prince William was within 10 minutes of our homes. Now an hour plus commute each way is not uncommon. Most of our skaters however attend regular school and some skaters have had to stop skating because the commute and costs are just too much.

The collapsed rink actually looks worse now than the photos below. I suppose it should be mentioned for those who live close to their rinks to realize how good they've got it and how quickly something can be taken away.

Hope this finds you all doing well.

Sincerely,
Janet Duckworth
